Summary

The works attributed to Homer include the two oldest and greatest European epic poems, the Odyssey and the Iliad。 These have been published in the Loeb Classical Library for three quarters of a century, the Greek text facing a faithful and literate prose translation by A。 T。 Murray。 William F。 Wyatt now brings the Loeb's Iliad up to date, with a rendering that retains Murray's admirable style but is written for today's readers。

You will be lost and mocked in Hades!-tI did not know it was Patroclus! He was disguised in your gear-tYour body will be disfigured…Words to that effect。And as we know- no need for a spoiler alert here- Hector is not only murdered by Achilles, but tied and dragged through the dustWhile the courtesy offered at the start of the scene is understandable and comme il faut, the end of it appears odd。-tIs it the movie?-tWas it like this in the original masterpiece?-tI don’t knowBut the fact is that I wondered why is it that the Trojans did not pour arrows on –granted the well protected, except for his heel- Achilles?He just behaved in a heinous manner and he was close enough to the walls for the archers to prepare shooting, only to be stopped by hector when he had approached their city。Otherwise this is good entertainment 。。。more

Very good edition by David B。 Monro and Thomas W。 Allen。 This first volume contains the Greek text with critical apparatus (Books 1-12), and an introduction and index of the Greek proper names。 The title, introduction and notes of the critical apparatus are written in Latin, as it is customary in this Oxford scholarly editions。Regarding form, the Iliad, is one of my favourite epic poems。
